[#191] Resolve "Changes to readme and contributor guide"

Margot requested to merge 191-updates-to-readme-and-contrib-guide into master

Closes #191 (closed) - in the end I opted to not move the link for the contributor guide higher in the readme. All i did was add a synopsis "basics" block to the main contributor guide.
