# what Team Friendo is about
This is a living document that describes Team Friendo's values and how they are practiced.
## what we believe
Most technology these days is owned by a corporation and provided for "free" on the basis of user engagement. this creates power dynamics between the people who own the technology and the people who use it.
We believe in the liberatory potential of technology - that everyone should have access to technology free from these capitalist power dynamics, and we see signalboost as an alternative to this existing paradigm when it comes to activism and social media. Social movements should be able to communicate broadly & virally without sacrificing their safety & security.
We also believe that technology _can_ be activism, especially when it facilitates people shaping the technology to meet their own needs. Part of how we practice this is by:
- prioritizing social justice groups as the main community of people who use signalboost
- being an active part of these social justice-oriented communities; listening and centering their needs as the tool is being developed
- making signalboost open-source, and making as much of the work surrounding it as public as possible
- commit to keeping signalboost free
- working as a team according to the values stated below
## what we do
Working with Team Friendo means:
_Come as you are; as long as you are upholding our shared values you will always be welcome._
We see each other as people first. This means that we care about each others’ emotional, psychological, and physical well being; we have compassion for peoples varying degrees of engagement in the project and will help each other work and communicate asynchronously.
We value writing high quality software, but we believe that good code comes from open and honest communication and being in community with one another.
The following behaviors are expected and requested of all community members.
- Value impact over intent. If you say something that is hurtful to other people but “didn’t mean to,” work to take accountability for the impact of your actions on others and center their experience over your good intentions.
- If someone says your actions make them feel a certain way, this is a fact that is not up for debate. Recognize the impact you had and try to figure out how minimize harm.
- If you’re the person who is being told they’re doing something wrong, resist the urge to be defensive. Just stop doing what they brought to your attention and apologize.
- Center the experiences of impacted communities over technical details. Always assume people are experts in their own experience
- Work hard to make things that people actually need.
- Listen to users as hard as possible; work to decenter your cognitive biases about what is and isn’t useful in response to their feedback.
- Avoid using exclusionary jargony language where possible, and where not possible, make efforts to provide inclusive explanations of technical terms.
- Encourage input from members of all experience and skill levels; take care to avoid status-based shaming signals.
- Nurture questions and don't make people feel bad for asking them.
A few good rules of thumb for doing this:
- Avoid “well actuallys” (correcting a person about a minor detail of something they’ve just said that was tangential to the point they were trying to make)
- Avoid feigned surprise
- Avoid backseat driving
## what we don’t do
While we adhere to the belief that people should have the freedom to set their own boundaries, there are some boundaries that should be assumed from the get-go. The following behaviors are by default unacceptable in the signalboost project:
Making sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist or otherwise discriminatory jokes and language.
Spontaneously posting or displaying sexually explicit or violent material. (If it is necessary to share such material when working on SignalBoost’s mission, do so with sensitivity. Be aware that many people don't want to see it.)
Posting or threatening to post other people’s personally identifying information ("doxing") without their consent.
Personal insults or attacks, particularly those of a sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist or otherwise discriminatory nature.
Violence, sexual assault, threats of violence, or violent language directed against another person, especially violence against a person or group based on a protected characteristic. (Display of weapons may constitute intimidation or a threat of violence.)
Inappropriate physical contact. You should have someone’s consent before touching them.
Unwelcome sexual attention: this includes sexualized comments or jokes, inappropriate touching, groping, and unwelcome sexual advances.
Deliberate intimidation, stalking or following (online or in person).
Deliberately undermining the spirit of this code while following the letter.
Sustained disruption of any community events, including talks, presentations, and online conversations.
Deliberately pushing against someone's stated boundaries.
Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior.
## Moderation
Team Friendo acts as conflict mediators in order to make the community a friendly, safe, and welcoming environment for developing and using Signalboost. You can always contact them confidentially with any question or concerns you have related to the code of conduct and any related issues via Signal: +1 (938) 444-8536
If you observe a Code of Conduct violation, let the person know that what they did is not appropriate and ask them to stop. If they do not immediately correct their behavior, or if you’re uncomfortable speaking up, contact Team Friendo. The moderation team will prioritize the well-being of the person who has been harmed. As soon as available, a Friendo will step in, identify themselves, and take steps to stop the immediate harm and discuss long term plans to prevent something similar from happening in the future.
Team Friendo reserves the right to ban someone from contributing to or using signalboost if they are perpetuating harm in the community or using the tool in contradiction of the values listed above.
