Stuck on 'checking status'

The tray icon has been stuck on 'checking status', eventually I get an error message which states "an error has occurred initializing the vpn post http:localhost:0/firewall/stop: dial tcp [::1]:0: connectex The requested address is not valid in its context". I'm on windows 10, I've disabled my antivirus and reinstalled riseup VPN to no success.

I've reinstalled multiple times after disabling all antivirus (malwarebytes, windows defender) and can't seem to get it working again.
